How to Knit vertical zigzags, Knitting Stitches

Looking for another easy knit-purl stitch pattern? Then read on because  in this post I will teach you how to knit vertical zigzags.

The first time I read somewhere that a knitting pattern is made up of simple knit and purl stitches, I thought…duh…you only get either knit or purl stitches!

I won’t reveal the colour of my hair or my profession but I can’t leave the elephant in the room – what exactly are knit and purl stitch patterns?

It means that there are no funny abbreviations or unusual or added knitting techniques but purely combinations of the two knitting stitches you learned to knit, i.e. knit and purl.

explanatory notes

**Second row and all WS rows – knit the knit stitches and purl the purls (remember you need a stockinette-type stitch), so what it really means is that:

  • Stockinette stitch – knit the RS and purl the WS;
  • If you face the first row on the WS – your first 4 sts have bumps (purl)  and the next 4 are knit sts, and that is exactly what it means to knit the knit and purl the purl sts.

more about vertical zigzags

Vertical zigzag stitch is an easy knitting stitch, using a combination of knit and purl stitches only.

The pattern is reversible, which means it looks the same on both the right and wrong sides of the knitting project. Because of this amazing ‘double-sided look’ the pattern is very suitable for use in scarves, blankets and sweaters or jerseys.

The stitch is similar to diagonal spiral rib stitch, though the latter is knit in multiples of a 6-stitch combination.
