Knitting Stitches – How to knit double moss stitch
In this post, you can learn how to knit the Double Moss Stitch. However, there seem to be different ‘looks’ of the double moss stitch.
Let’s start with what the British (including all the Commonwealth nations) and Irish know as Moss stitch (Seed stitch or Linen Stitch) – knit 1, purl 1 across your row, and then reverse this on the opposite side by knitting the purl stitches and purling the knit stitches. This is thus a 2-row stitch pattern.
American moss stitch is worked in a 4-row stitch pattern and is often called double moss stitch.
Scroll down to the bottom for a look at the American moss sample and pattern, also known as Double Moss stitch. In this post, you’ll learn to knit double moss stitch, also in a 2-row version, but a little different though.

another version of the pattern – KNIT double moss STITCH
To avoid confusion, I include a swatch of another version of double moss stitch that you may see on the Internet, Pinterest or in old knitting books.
It reminds me of a bit of basket weave stitch, but in fact, it is also a k2, p2 combination.
MULTIPLES OF 4 + 2
Cast on multiples of 4 stitches – my sample (image below) is worked over 30 stitches.
Row 1: *K2, P2; rep from * to last 2 sts, K2.
Row 2: *P2, K2; rep from * to last 2 sts , P2.
Row 3: *P2, K2; rep from * to last 2 sts , P2.
Row 4: *K2, P2; rep from * to last 2 sts , K2.
Repeat the 4-row pattern until your work is the desired length.
American moss aka double moss STITCH
For more clarity, here is a sample of double moss stitch also known as American moss (image below):
My sample shown is worked over 30 stitches, with 4mm knitting needles and a double knit yarn.
The pattern is as follows:
Rows 1 and 4: K1, *p1, k1; rep from * across
Rows 2 and 3: P1, *k1, p1; rep from * across.
Repeat Rows 1–4 for the pattern.
where to use the double moss stitch
- Use the double moss stitch as edgings instead of ribs as they don’t curl.
- It works as a decorative filler stitch.
- If you alternate between double moss and stocking stitch in squares you get an interesting pattern and a difference in textures.
