Learn to Knit 1 x 1 Garter Stitch Rib
Don’t expect for one minute that if you knit garter stitch rib that it will look like garter stitch at all!
Unlike other variations of the garter stitch rib, the 1 x 1 garter rib is not a reversible pattern.
If you compare the WS of the garter rib with the RS of the Rice stitch, the 2 patterns can easily be mistaken.
I’m hoping that you will love the simplemess of this knitting rib pattern.

more about the rib stitch
A 1 x 1 ribbing consists of columns of knit stitches alternating with columns of purl stitches (with the purl stitches neatly tucked away in between the knit stitches) = true for the RS.
The WS creates a garter stitch type loop.
If you ask my why I like this stitch, I’ll have to give you more than one reason:
- garter rib is more stretchy than the 1 x 1 – k1, p1 rib;
- it looks neater on the RS without having to knit in the back loops of the stitches;
- the WS is a pretty pattern, which will make something like eg a scarf, so much more interesting.
