The squares are folded and sewn to create the angel’s shape, with a few finishing touches to define the wings and add a loop for hanging.

This pattern is great for decorating your tree, adding to festive displays, or making special gifts. It blends old knitting skills with a modern twist.  You can do so much with the pattern and I am curious to see what you make with it!

Materials Needed

  • Yarn: Choose two yarn weights in white for a unique, textured look. A thicker yarn for the body and a lighter weight yarn for the wings adds contrast and elegance.  I used Elle DK (double knit) yarn for the body of the little angel and Mohair Knit yarn for the wings.
  • Needle Size: Use different needles to size to correspond with your yarn choice (typically smaller for the wings for a tighter, more defined look).
  • 4 mm knitting needles (6US, 8UK) used for DK yarn and 2.mm for wings.
  • Tapestry Needle: For weaving in ends and assembling the angel.
  • Scissors
  • 7mm / 2.5″ wooden bead (optional) or
  • Fabric or stocking for head and
  • Toy stuffing

2. Knit the Wings (Smaller Square):
With mohair yarn and matching needles knit the above pattern to create a smaller mitered square for the wings.

3. Assemble the Angel

1. Fold and Shape the Body:

  • With the wrong side facing, fold the granny square in half along the long sides to create a triangle shape.
  • Next, fold up the bottom point to shape the angel’s body into a triangle.
  • Using your yarn needle, sew the folded edges together, secure the yarn, and weave in the ends to keep everything tidy.
  • Refer to the image for a clear view of how to fold and shape your knitted mitered square.

2. Attach the Wings:

  • Fold the smaller mitered square on the fold into a triangle.
  • Sew along the two sides of the triangle to secure it.
  • Position this smaller triangle at the back of the body, attaching it with a few stitches to the body, to form the wings. (See image for reference.)

3. Add the Hair:

  • Cut 15 pieces of rope or cotton, each about 4 inches long, depending on your preferred hair thickness.
  • Lay the pieces flat, then use another 3-inch thread to tie a knot in the middle of the strands (see image below).
  • Thread your needle through the knotted yarn/rope and insert it through the bead.
  • Make a knot close the bead (at the bottom) and with a dot of glue, secure the ends.
  • Use a dab of glue to attach the bead securely to the body.
  • Trim the hair neatly to your desired length.

4. Add the Beanie (Optional):

  • If desired, create a small beanie or decorative top to place over the angel’s head. Customize as you like!
  • Cast on 15 sts with mohair yarn and matching needles.
  • Knit 10 rows.
  • Leave a long tail, cut, and with your needle, thread through all the stitches on the needle.
  • Cinch tightly and sew the side closed.

5. Finishing Touches:

  • To make the hanging loop, thread a 4-inch piece of yarn onto your needle.
  • Insert the needle through the bottom of the bead, slide it up through the bead, and then back down along the same path.
  • Tie the yarn ends in an overhand knot just above the bead to secure the loop.
  • Add another knot at the top of the loop for extra strength.

Tips for adding a Homemade Touch to Perfect Angels

  • For a delicate effect, consider using metallic or sparkly yarn for the wings.
  • Add facial features with a Sharpie if you like.
  • What is an angel without a halo?  Create one and attach to your angels’ head.
