Two-Color Mohair Infinity Scarf Pattern

Looking for a soft, elegant scarf that’s quick to knit? This two-color mohair infinity scarf combines luxurious texture with simple stitches, making it the perfect beginner-friendly project for cosy winter days.

This beginner-friendly pattern uses a simple knit stitch and larger needles than typically recommended for the yarn. The larger needle size creates a looser, airier fabric with the soft, flowing drape that makes this scarf so special. When knitting with the larger needles, I give the fabric a good little tuck every two or so rows, to keep everything smooth and even as I work.

Materials You’ll Need

  • Mohair yarn in two coordinating colours (25g each). Pure mohair is a luxurious but more expensive choice. If you’d like to keep costs down, a soft acrylic yarn or acrylic blend is an economical alternative that still gives your scarf a lovely, fluffy look.
  • For a thicker yarn, use 2 strands of yarn together.
  • 10mm metric knitting needles, US Size 15, and an old UK/Imperial Size 000
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors

Why Mohair Yarn Makes Such Beautiful Scarves

Mohair is prized for its delicate halo, incredible softness, and warmth. Unlike heavier wool scarves, mohair creates an airy fabric that traps warmth without adding weight.

The blend of two colours gives the finished cowl extra depth and allows the fluffy fibres to blend beautifully together.

Choosing Yarn Colors for Mohair Scarves

Some beautiful combinations include:

  • Blush Pink & Raspberry
  • Cream & Burgundy
  • Grey & White
  • Sage & Ivory
  • Navy & Silver
  • Chocolate & Beige

The fluffy halo softens the transition between colours, creating a rich blended appearance.

Written Instructions to Knit the Easy Mohair Scarf

Using the recommended yarn and knitting needles, cast on 50 sts.

First row:  RS – With color A – knit across

2nd Row:  purl stitches to the end of row

Repeat Rows 1 and 2 until you have used the first ball of yarn. Join Color B and continue working the pattern, repeating Rows 1 and 2 until you reach the desired length.

Joining the Short Ends

  • Bring the two short ends of the scarf together and, with the right sides facing each other, neatly stitch them together using a yarn needle, matching yarn and whip stitch, to form the infinity scarf.
  • In other words, you sew the cast-on edge to the cast-off edge.

How to Adjust the Size of the Lightweight Winter Scarf Knitting Pattern

The beauty of this infinity scarf is that it is easy to adapt to the size you prefer.

To make the scarf longer: Simply continue knitting until you reach your desired length before joining or seaming the ends. Keep in mind that a longer scarf will give you more wraps around your neck.

To make the scarf shorter: Stop knitting once the scarf reaches your preferred length. For a snugger cowl, make the finished length shorter; for a looser infinity scarf, make it longer.

To adjust the width: The width is determined by the number of stitches you cast on. Add more stitches for a wider scarf or cast on fewer stitches for a narrower one. If you change the number of stitches, make sure to keep any stitch-pattern repeat in mind so that the pattern remains balanced.

Because mohair and fluffy yarns can vary considerably, I recommend making a small swatch first if you want to change the dimensions significantly. This will help you see how the yarn behaves with the larger needles and give you a better idea of the finished size.

Frequently Asked Questions

Is mohair itchy?

Modern mohair blends are usually incredibly soft, especially when blended with silk or fine wool.  The yarn used for the pattern is acrylic and is not itchy at all.  However, some people may react differently to the yarn and should be cautious with their yarn choice.

Can beginners knit with mohair?

Absolutely. Choosing a simple stitch pattern makes mohair very beginner-friendly. Using larger needles with mohair makes this project especially beginner-friendly. The larger stitches are easier to see and work with, making the knitting process more relaxed and enjoyable.

How much yarn do I need?

This depends on the yarn weight and finished size. Always check the pattern requirements before purchasing yarn.  2 Balls of mohair of 25 grams each, should be enough.

Can I substitute another yarn?

Yes. Alpaca, brushed alpaca, or other fluffy natural fiber yarns can create a similar look.
