Instructions
- Start with the Basic Granny Square crochet pattern:
Crochet a traditional granny square to your preferred size using the simple chain, double crochet, and slip stitch techniques. - Create a Double Layer – Option 1:
For heat resistance, make two identical squares and crochet them together using single crochets around the edges. - Create a Double-Thick Pot Holder – Option 2 (modern granny):
Crochet one traditional and one solid granny square and crochet the two squares together using a single crochet stitch around the edges - Add a Loop:
Attach a small chain loop in one corner for easy hanging. - Finishing: Add a crochet applique, bow or theme-inspired motif, or embroider a border around the inner corner. I.e. for the holiday season, add leaves, a bow or something Christmassy.

Each round will be crocheted in an alternating color.
1st Round – color A (black)
2nd ROund – color B (white)
3rd Round – color A (black)
4th Round – color B (white)

Solid Granny Square Pattern (back piece)
This solid granny square is perfect for projects where a sturdy, cohesive fabric is needed, such as potholders, blankets, or bags!
WRITTEN INSTRUCTIONS IN US TERMS
Round 1: Foundation
- Start: Make a magic ring (or ch 4, join with a sl st to form a ring).
- Work into the ring: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), work 2 dc, ch 2 (this forms the first corner).
- [3 dc, ch 2] Repeat three more times. You should have four groups of 3 dc with four 2 ch sp (chain spaces) between them.
- Join: Slst to the top of the starting ch 3 to close the round.
2nd Round: Build the Square
- Ch 3: Counts as the first dc, then dc in the next 2 sts.
- In the corner space: Work [ch-2 sp = 2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc].
- Continue: Dc in each dc along the side until you reach the next corner (2nd Roudn = 3dc’s in every dc from the previous round + 2dc’s in each corner = 7dc’s).
- Corners: In each ch-2 corner sp, work [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc].
- Join: Sl st to the top of the starting ch 3.
Rounds 3–5 (or until your square is big enough): Repeat the Pattern
- Begin: Ch 3 (counts as first dc), then dc in each st along the side, (dc’s in every dc from the previous round + 2 dc’s in each corner = x dc’s per side).
- Corners: In each corner space, work [2 dc, ch 2, 2 dc].
- Join: At the end of each round, slst to the top of the starting ch 3.

Finishing
- After completing Round 5 or 7, fasten off and weave in all ends securely using a tapestry needle.
- Crochet your second square.
- Block your squares if necessary to even out the shape.
- Join the Squares:
Place the two squares together with the wrong sides facing each other. Use single crochet or whip stitch to join them, leaving one side open if you’d like to add padding (optional). - Add a Border:
Work a decorative edge using your favorite crochet stitch pattern, such as picot or crab stitch (reverse single crochet) or a simple scallop border. - Attach a Hanging Loop:
For hanging, crochet a small loop at one corner:- Chain 12, slip stitch into the same corner space. Fasten off and weave in ends.
- Or ch20+1, turn and work single crochet sts in the back of the chains. Fasten off and weave in the ends.
