Garter Stitch Potholder, an easy gift idea

The garter stitch potholder is quick and easy to make.

Although garter stitch is the most basic in knitting stitches, it is without a doubt one of the most used stitches in knitting.

Why would you want to use such a basic pattern?

  • For one – it is so quick to make. Start and finish the potholder within an hour or less. Fact is if you can make something and finish it the same day, you get a feeling of accomplishment. And that alone will prompt you to make more;
  • You can add a modern touch to it, with your choice of yarn and embellishments;
  • Because the potholders are so quick, easy and inexpensive to make, you can easily make a few as gift;

more about knitting garter stitch potholders

Garter stitch is the use of the basic knit stitch for all the stitches and all the rows.

The stitch is reversible, in other words you can use either side of the potholder as the ‘front’.

When you knit the basic knit stitch, you do so through the front loop of each stitch.

I knit a few test swatches to try to achieve even edges.

Top Tip:Knit the very first stitch of each row in the back loop.
