The most popular Granny Squares to use for Throws
Once upon a time, nothing was wasted, and in an attempt to use up all their scraps of wool grannies created granny squares. Ok, that is just a story…
In this post I am sharing some of the most popular granny squares to use in throws and blankets. Why not reduce your stash a bit?
You don’t have to be frugal though, you may also decide to head over to your favorite craft store for some lovely yarn in just about all of your dream colors!
I have a question for you:
Is a crocheted square a granny square just because it is square (and made by a granny (emoji face)?
or
because the pattern repeats the 3 clusters of double crochets with spaces in between?
or
the pattern is square and there is a definite line of openings leading to the corners?
There is no question about it that the image below represents the classic granny square, but what about some of the fancier versions?

more about granny squares
As with everything in life, you will come across different patterns for the original granny square. Here follow some of the differences:
- Some patterns start with 4 chains, others with a magic ring;
- In multiple colored grannies, some people will cut the yarn at every color change and reconnect in any of the corners;
- The original granny square has 3 to 5 rows;
- In this tutorial, the pattern turns after the first row – some crocheters may not like the method because you end up with a mix of front and back views of the stitches.

1. traditional or classic granny square by GOOGLE / PINTEREST
- Credit goes to Google or Pinterest for this image. Regrettably, there is no reference to the original owner of the image BUT it is an awesome graph of the traditional granny square and is also the pattern I’m using. Increase the rows to form a blanket – basically one big square. The only change to the pattern will be that the 3 x double crochet clusters will increase with each row.

4. solid granny squares
Maria crocheted her solid squares in colors to match her ocean theme. But you don’t have to stick to one color – the pattern lends itself to a lot of variations.
5. flowery granny squares
DAISY FLOWER GRANNY SQUARE BY COLOR ‘N CREAM
The pattern used in the image above is by Color ‘n Cream. It was the first time I ever crocheted the daisy and with her proper picture tutorial I had no problem whatsoever. Some patterns do a 8-petal daisy which also looks nice. The stitch used to create the petal is a triple crochet cluster.
