Flat Crochet Christmas Tree

A quick and simple Christmas craft – use the granny triangle tree pattern. It’s ideal for beginners and makes a lovely handmade Christmas gift idea.

Yarn + Tools You’ll Need

  • Yarn: scrap yarn in any weight. The Christmas tree in the image above was made using chunky (equivalent to Bulky Yarn Weight #5 in the US) (I used a soft, creamy acrylic blend).  Optional:  Different color yarn and different yarn weights for the edging.
  • Hook: 6 mm crochet hook = US J/10 or UK 4 or 6.5 mm hook (K) or crochet hooks matching the weight of your prefered yarn
  • Notions: Scissors and yarn needle.
  • Glue Gun: If you want to avoid any sewing, attach the bow, star or your embellishment using your craft weapon!

Skill Level: Easy

This pattern uses simple stitches and easy repeats, perfect for confident beginners.

Pattern Notes and Special Stitches for Granny Triangle Crochet Tree

  • The pattern is worked flat.
  • ch3 (turning chain) counts as your first double crochet stitch of a row.
  • Adjust the size by changing yarn weight or hook size.
  • Gauge is not essential for this project – play around with yarn weight and hook size for different-sized scarves.
  • For a layered or 3D look, you can make two triangles and join them (see my original Triangle Granny Christmas Tree Ornament post).

How to Crochet a Picot Edge

If you’d like to give your Flat Crochet Christmas Tree a delicate, finished look, add a picot edge around the border. It’s an easy little detail that makes all the difference!

Here’s how to crochet a picot edge:

  1. Single crochet (sc) in the first stitch.
  2. Chain 3 (I used 2chains around the tree ornament).
  3. Insert your hook into the first chain made (or into the base of the chain, whichever you prefer).
  4. Slip stitch (sl st) to close the small loop – this forms your picot.
  5. Single crochet (sc) into the next stitch.

Repeat steps 2–5 all around your tree for a neat, festive edging.

Tip: You can make your picots smaller (ch 2) or larger (ch 4) depending on your yarn and the look you want. For a softer finish, add a picot every 2 or 3 stitches instead of every stitch.

Finished size: Approx. 14cm x 13cm (bottom) (approximately 5.5″ × 5.1″)

The pattern uses US crochet terms.

Make 2 Granny Triangles (of each size).

In color A:

1st Row: Make a magic ring, in ring make ch3 and dc3, ch3, dc4, ch3, dc4, ch3 and slip st in the top of the first 3 chains.  Close the ring and ch3. Don’t turn your work to crochet on the wrong side.

2nd Row: With front still facing, slip stitch through the top of your first 3 dc’s from the previous row (to reach the first ch3-space of row 1). Slip stitch in the ch3-space and [ch3, dc3, ch3, dc4, ch1, dc4, ch3, dc4] (one cluster), ch1, into remaining 2 ch3-spaces, make another cluster – [dc4, ch3, dc4], ch1 and slip st in the top of the first 3 chains.

3 rd Row: As in row 2, *slip stitch through the top of the first 3 dc’s from the previous row (to reach the first ch3-space of row 2). Slip stitch in the ch3-space and make a cluster *[ch3, dc3, ch3, dc4, ch1, dc4, ch1, dc4], ch3, dc4 in next ch1-space, ch1*, repeat from * to * 2 more times. Slip st in the top of the first 3 chains.  Your tree is done!

Next, we’ll be making the tree trunk.

CHRISTMAS TREE TRUNK

With front of tree facing, at the base of the tree, attach your yarn to the right of the 4dc-sts (in the middle).

First row: Ch3 and work 3 dc’s in second to last 3 dc (ch3 forms your 1st dc), (first row of your trunk).

Second row: Ch3 and dc another 3 dc’s from the second dc to end.

Bind off and weave in all ends.

ADDING A PICOT EDGE to your flat tree

Join color B (optional) at the top of your tree with a slip stitch.

Ch2 and slip st into the base of the first chain (first picot).

Sc 2 in the following 2 stitches or openings along the side of your crochet project.

Repeat ch2 picot, sc2 until you have covered all the edges of the tree.

Try to create picots in the corners of the tree (mine worked out nicely).

You can use the end of your yarn to form the hanging loop. If so, weave it through the top and make a knot at the ends or secure it with a sewing stitch and your embroidery needle.

TIP:  It is your choice if you want the picot edge to go around the trunk or not.

Finishing Touches

  • Optional:  Block your tree lightly for a neat finish.
  • Attach a hanging loop using yarn or ribbon at the top of the tree.
  • Decorate with small beads, sequins, or a star button for that extra Christmas sparkle!, or
  • Add a small yarn bowwooden bead, or mini ribbon to finish off your tree.
