Yarn + Tools You’ll Need
- Yarn: 2 skeins of yarn in chunky (equivalent to Bulky Yarn Weight #5 in the US) (I used a soft, creamy acrylic blend)
- Hook: 6 mm crochet hook = US J/10 or UK 4 or 6.5 mm hook (K)
- Notions: Scissors, tapestry needle, and optional tassel maker
- Gauge: Not essential for this pattern
- Finished size: Approx. 7” x 80” (approximately 18.5 x 200 cm)
Yarn Weight Tip: Chunky vs Bulky Explained
If you’re crocheting from South Africa, the UK, or Australia, you’ll often see the term chunky yarn.
In the US, that same yarn weight is called bulky weight yarn — labeled as #5 on the yarn label.
Both are thick, cozy yarns that work up quickly and give your projects a lovely soft texture — just right for scarves, cowls, and blankets.
💡 Quick Tip:
If you can’t find chunky yarn locally, look for bulky (#5) yarn — or hold two strands of worsted (#4) yarn together to get a similar thickness.
This flexibility makes the pattern easy to adapt to what you have in your stash!
Skill Level: Easy
This pattern uses simple stitches and easy repeats, perfect for confident beginners.

Pattern Notes and Special Stitches to Crochet Scarves
‘Cause you’re not going to be making one, are you?
- US terms are used.
- ch3 (turning chain) counts as your first double crochet stitch of a row.
- Make double crochet stitches in the top of the st in the previous row, to ensure a straight row of double crochet stitches.
- Gauge is not essential for this project – play around with yarn weight and hook size for different-sized scarves.
How to crochet Puff Stitches
- Yarn over
- Insert your hook into the stitch (or space) where you want your puff. Yarn over and pull up a loop.
- Repeat steps 1 and 2, two more times (so you’ll do it three times in total). You should now have 7 loops on your hook.
- Yarn over and pull through all loops on your hook, sl st – and voilà, your puff stitch is complete!
- Each completed puff st is followed by ch1.

Pattern Instructions for A Textured Crochet Scarf Pattern
Written Pattern Instructions using US crochet terminology
The crochet stitch pattern uses multiples of 7 + 3
Ch 31
Row 1: In second ch from hook sc, sc to end, turn.
Row 2: ch3 (count as 1st st), dc in next st, skip 2 sts, [puff, ch1, puff in next st], sk 2, 2dc in next 2 sts, turn.
Row 3: ch3 (count as 1st st), dc in next st, *in the chain 1-space from the second row puff, ch1, puff in next st, 2dc in next 2 sts*. Repeat from * to * to end of the row, turn.
Repeat Row 3 until your scarf measures your desired length.
Optional: Neaten with a single crochet stitch around all the edges. Fasten off and weave in ends.
Finishing your Beautiful Scarf
- Add tassels or fringe to each end for extra flair.
- I’ve added 2 tassels in each corner. Would you add more?
- Lightly steam or wet block your scarf to even out stitches and enhance texture.
How to Adjust the Size of Your Modern Scarf Pattern
If there’s one thing we all know about crocheters, it’s that we love making crochet patterns our own. Adjusting a pattern to suit your taste is part of the fun, isn’t it?
To adjust the desired width of this scarf, keep in mind that the stitch pattern works in multiples of 7 + 3. So, if you’d like your scarf a little wider, simply add extra chains in multiples of 7 to the starting chain. For example:
- One extra repeat → add 7 chains
- Two extra repeats → add 14 chains
And just like that, you can customize your scarf to the perfect width for you—or your gift recipient!
