The classic granny square pattern is a great choice for a square design as it is an easy pattern using simple stitches.

But you may be thinking, if everyone and her sister attempt granny square projects, how can you ensure your finished blanket looks unique?

Before starting your crocheted baby blanket, consider the following:

1.  Who is the blanket for?

2.  How big should it be?

3. Which yarn weight are you going to use?

4. What are your color combinations?

5.  Are you going to use one square pattern, two or more?

6.  There is the basic granny square, or

7.   Solid granny square.

8.  You can opt for the daisy granny square, or

9.  Granny squares with centered shapes, or what about

9.  An Animal themed granny square baby blanket?

There are endless possibilities to design your gorgeous baby blanket, but let’s look at what Carina created, shall we?

Favorite yarns to use for easy crochet baby blankets

Yarn weight is a personal choice.  Some crocheters prefer thicker yarn such as worsted weight yarn or Aran and others prefer double knit (DK).

Sometimes, our choices are limited to the shops we have available (can you relate?)

Here are some yarns used to crochet granny squares, on various crochet blogs:

Self-striping yarn is another option if you love assorted colors but dread color changes. Then Lion Brand’s Mandala is the yarn just for you.

What will you need to crochet the beautiful granny square blanket?

Soft yarn in the weight of your choice.

Crochet hook.

Ensure that you have enough yarn to finish your crochet project.

For the Little Darling baby blanket, she used:

3 skeins of 100g Elle Double Knit yarn in

3 complementary colors

3 skeins of 100g in a contrasting color for the seams and border

That is a total of 12 skeins of yarn (1200g)

Tapestry needle

Measuring tape

You’ll need to know how to:

  • Make a magic circle or ring
  • How to chain stitch
  • Making a double crochet
  • Joining with a slip stitch

Will depend on the time of yarn used and the size of your hook size.

  1. Choose one of the free granny square patterns previously shared on the blog – in this post.
  2. Crochet 60 squares – 20 in each color.
  3. In beige, crochet and join the squares together as per this YouTube channel’s instructions below.

First Round:

In beige, crochet a round of single crochets. In the corners, you’ll single crochet, chain, and single crochet.

Second Round:

Chain 3, skip one single crochet, and join with a slip stitch. Repeat for all four sides of the blanket.

Ensure that you slip stitch in the corners. If you end up with one space before a corner, rather skip two single crochet and then slip stitch in the corner.

Weave in all ends and enjoy your handmade masterpiece.
