Granny Square Crochet Christmas Tree
This tutorial combines the classic traditional granny square with a mitered square, creating a delightful three-dimensional granny Christmas tree that’s easier to make than it looks.

MATERIALS NEEDED
- Yarn: 100% DK cotton yarn
- Traditional Granny Square – 30g cotton in beige and 30g cotton yarn in pink (or colors of your choice)
- Mitered Granny Square – 30g cotton in light pink (or colors of your choice)
- There is no need to buy yarn, use what is in your yarn stash
- Hook: 4mm (G/6) crochet hook
- Tapestry needle: For weaving in ends
- Scissors: To cut yarn
- Embellishments – beads, sequins, pom-poms or tassels.
- Blocking tools (pins, foam mat, spray bottle)

SIZE / DIMENSIONS (APPROXIMATE)
Traditional Square – Full-sized Crochet Christmas Tree (finished item): 5″ long (12.5 cm)(measured from top to bottom of tree trunk) x 3″ wide (approximately 8 cm) (measured on the widest part of the crochet trees).
Mitered Square – Full-sized Crochet Christmas Tree (finished item): 4″ long (10.5 cm)(measured from top to bottom of tree trunk) x 3″ wide (approximately 8 cm)
GAUGE
With the materials as listed, the traditional granny square has 4 rows and measures 5″ x 5″ (13cm x 13cm).
The mitered granny square has 6 rows and measures 4″ x 4″ (10cm x 10cm).
You can achieve different sizes by adjusting yarn weight, and amount of rounds crocheted.
Festive Granny Square Crochet Christmas Tree Tutorial
Written Pattern Instructions using US crochet terminology
Traditional Granny Square Pattern
Each square will be made in two colors and four rounds.
Yarn Colors used:
Color A – Beige
Color B – Light Pink
Round 1 (Beige):
Start with a magic ring.
(center loop is also called your foundation chain)
Ch3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc in ring; *ch 2, 3 dc in ring, repeat from * repeat * to * 2 more times, ch 2; join with sl st or ss in 3rd ch of beginning chain.
(12 dc and 4 ch-2 sps in this rnd).
Fasten off. {Option – You can also join the pink yarn without fastening off.}
Round 2 (Light Pink):
Attach the light pink yarn in any corner chain space
Ch3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in corner ch-2 sp, ch 2;
*(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner ch-2 sp, ch2*, repeat from * repeat * 2 more times and join with sl st or ss in 3rd ch of beginning chain.
Fasten off.
(24 dc (8 x 3)(counting each dc cluster in each corner space), 8 ch-2 spaces in this round).
Round 3 (Beige):
Attach thebeige yarn in any corner chain space.
Ch3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in corner ch-2 sp;
ch1 and 3 dc in the next ch-1 space, ch1;
*(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner, ch1, 3 dc in the next ch-1 space, ch1*;
repeat from * to * 2 more times and join with sl st or ss in the 3rd ch of beginning chain.
(36 dc (12 x 3), 4 ch-2 spaces and 8 ch-1 spaces in this round).
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Round 4 (Light Pink):
Attach light pink yarn in any corner chain space.
Ch3 (counts as first dc), 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc in corner ch-2 sp;
[ch1 and 3 dc in the next ch-1 space, ch1] x 2;
*(3 dc, ch 2, 3 dc) in next corner, [ch1 and 3 dc in the next ch-1 space, ch1] x 2*;
repeat from * to * 2 more times and join with sl st or ss in the 3rd ch of the beginning chain.
(48 dc (16 x 3), 4 ch-2 spaces and 12 ch-1 spaces in this round).
Fasten off and weave in ends.
Mitered Granny Square Pattern
Each square will be made in one color and six rounds.
Round 1 (Light Pink):
ch5, sl st in first ch to close circle.
In circle, ch1, sc, ch2, dc2, ch2, dc3, close ring, turn.
Round 2:
Ch3 (counts as the first dc), dc in each of 2nd and 3rd sts, ch 1; [dc3, ch2, dc3 = fan] in ch2-opening, ch1, dc3 (make third dc in top of starting ch), turn.
(6 dc, 1 fan and 2 ch-1 sps in this rnd).
Round 3:
Ch3 (counts as the first dc), dc in each of 2nd and 3rd sts, dc2 in ch1-opening, ch 1; [dc3, ch2, dc3 = fan] in ch2-opening, ch1, dc2 in ch1-opening, dc3 (make third dc in top of starting ch), turn.
(10 dc, 1 fan and 2 ch-1 sps in this rnd).
Round 4:
Ch3 (counts as the first dc), dc4, dc2 in ch1-opening, ch 1; [dc3, ch2, dc3 = fan] in ch2-opening, ch1, dc2 in ch1-opening, dc5 (make third dc in top of starting ch), turn.
(14 dc, 1 fan and 2 ch-1 sps in this rnd).
Round 5:
Ch3 (counts as the first dc), dc6, dc2 in ch1-opening, ch 1; [dc3, ch2, dc3 = fan] in ch2-opening, ch1, dc2 in ch1-opening, dc7 (make third dc in top of starting ch), turn.
(18 dc, 1 fan and 2 ch-1 sps in this rnd).
Round 6:
Ch3 (counts as the first dc), dc8, dc2 in ch1-opening, ch 1; [dc3, ch2, dc3 = fan] in ch2-opening, ch1, dc2 in ch1-opening, dc9 (make third dc in top of starting ch), turn.
(22 dc, 1 fan and 2 ch-1 sps in this rnd).
Fasten off and weave in ends, or leave a long tail to sew the ends closed.
BLOCKING YOUR SQUARES
Blocking of squares is optional. This is not an item that will be worn, so if you don’t block them, it is not a problem.

STEP-BY-STEP-INSTRUCTIONS
SEAMING SQUARE INTO A SQUARE TREE
With the wrong side facing, fold your square into a triangle, and the bottom piece tug underneath the two flaps (as per the image below).
- Thread your tapestry needle with matching yarn.
- Use a whip stitch to join the vertical seam.
- Fold the bottom flap, tug it underneath the vertical seam, and sew it to form a closed triangle.
TRUNK OF THE TREE
- Lay your Christmas tree flat with front side facing.
- Attach matching yarn to the bottom of your tree with a slip stitch (sl st).
- In the same space, ch3, hdc 3, sl st.
- Substitute the yarn trunk with a piece of wood or cinnamon stick.
HANGING LOOP
You have two options for creating a hanging loop:
- Attach a piece of ribbon to the back of the square tree, near the top edge.
- Attach a piece of yarn to the top of the square Christmas tree, make a knot and hide the knot.
ADDING FINISHING AND PERSONALIZED TOUCHES
- Buttons or Beads: Scatter colorful buttons or beads across the tree.
- Star Topper: Crochet a small star or use a pre-made one to crown your tree.
- Wooden Trinkets or some of your favorite things
- Mini Pom-Poms: Sew or glue mini pom-poms as ornaments
- Play with colors! Try classic green and red or go modern with pastel shades.
- Adjust the size of the squares to create a tree that fits your space.
- Use sparkly or metallic yarnfor an extra festive touch.
How long will it take to make a Crochet Granny Square Christmas Stocking?
To crochet one granny square and to do all the sewing, won’t take more than an hour.
