This Puff Stitch Crochet Tree Is the Cutest DIY Ornament You’ll Make This Christmas

There’s something magical about handmade ornaments — especially when they’re textured, soft, and full of character. This Puff Stitch Flat Christmas Tree is one of those patterns that looks far more complicated than it is. You’ll only need a bit of yarn, your favorite hook, and a cozy afternoon to create a tree that’s perfectly imperfect — just like a handmade Christmas should be.

These two crochet Christmas tree free patterns are simple, fun, and absolutely adorable! Using just a few puff stitches and some chunky yarn, you can whip up trees for your mantel, gift wrapping, or even your Christmas tree itself.

The two variations differ ever so slightly – but that’s the magic. You can mix and match to create a whole forest of crocheted Christmas trees, each with its own personality.

Pattern Notes and Special Stitches to Crochet Trees

  • US terms are used.
  • Each tree is worked from the middle out, starting with 6 puff stitches in the center.
  • Gauge is not essential for this project – play around with yarn weight and hook size for different-sized trees.

How to crochet  Puff Stitches

  1. Yarn over
  2. Insert your hook into the stitch (or space) where you want your puff. Yarn over and pull up a loop.
  3. Repeat steps 1 and 2, two more times (so you’ll do it three times in total). You should now have 7 loops on your hook.
  4. Yarn over and pull through all loops on your hook, sl st – and voilà, your puff stitch is complete!
  5. Each completed puff st is followed by ch1.

Here are a few helpful tips to help you get those puffs looking perfectly plump:

  1. Loosen up – if you usually crochet quite tightly, try going up half a hook size.
  2. Choose your yarn wisely – a smooth yarn works best. Splitty yarns can be frustrating when you’re pulling through a bunch of loops at once.
  3. Find your flow – once you settle into a rhythm, your puff stitches will come out beautifully even.

Puffs are quite versatile and will work with most yarn types and weights. For best results, try out your yarn and see if you like the look of it.

Ready to make your little puff stitch tree? It works up quickly, and the texture makes it look far more intricate than it really is.

Follow these easy steps:

Step 1: Start with a Magic ring and first round

Round 1: Make a magic ring, ch 1, and pull ch to the length of your puff sts, puff st, ch 1. Repeat until you have 6 puff stitches. Pull the magic ring closed and join with slip st.

Step 2: Crochet the second round

Round 2: slip st into next opening between puff sts, ch2, in same st make 2 dc, ch 2, 3 dc (corner), *puff st in next ch1 space, in next sp [3dc, ch2, 3dc]*,  Repeat from * to * one more time, puff st in next ch1 space. Sl st into the top of ch2.

Step 3: Finishing Touches

Round 3: (optional) Slip st around the edges of the tree, create the trunk, and finish off. Weave in ends, and attach a star or tassel to make it stand out from the rest.

Step 4: Create a Trunk for your Tree

TRUNK OF THE TREE #1

  • Lay your Christmas tree flat with front side facing.
  • Attach matching yarn to the bottom of your tree with a slip stitch (sl st) to the right side of the 3dc’s of the second round (see image below).
  • In the same space (or st), ch2.
  • dc 3 into each of the next 3 st, ch2 and sl st.
  • Substitute the yarn trunk with a piece of wood or a cinnamon stick.

TRUNK OF THE TREE #2

  • Lay your Christmas tree flat with the front side facing.
  • Attach matching yarn to the bottom of your tree, on the right side of the puff st, with a slip stitch (sl st) (see image below).
  • In the same space (or st), ch2.
  • On the left side of the puff st, dc 3, ch2, and sl st.

Step 5: Decorate or Attach a Loop

HANGING LOOP

You have two options for creating a hanging loop:

  1. Make a loop out of a piece of ribbon and attach to the back of the tree, near the top edge, or
  2. Attach a piece of yarn to the top of the square Christmas tree, make a knot, and hide the knot.

Decorating Ideas for Your Crocheted Trees

  • Add mini beads or sequins as “baubles.”
  • Attach ribbon loops for hanging to the top of the tree.
  • String multiple trees together to make a garland.
  • Use natural twigs as trunks at the bottom of the tree, for a rustic touch.

Maker’s Tip: These look adorable attached to gift tags or as part of a garland!
