Lacey Coat Hanger Cover Pattern Instructions

Step 1: START HERE

Measure the width and length of your wooden hanger. Loosely measure the width of your hanger and add 2 chains.  The piece is crocheted in width.

Step 2: Foundation Chain

With color A, chain enough stitches to match the width of your hanger.  With the hook and yarn weight recommended, chain 20 + 1.

Step 3: Ribbed Body

Row 1: sc blo in 2nd ch from hook and across
Row 2+: ch 1, turn, sc in BLO across. Proceed with rows until you have completed 80 rows or until the piece is long enough. Don’t cut off your working yarn, as you will need it to crochet the ends closed.

Two-colored hanger cover: Change colors after every 10 rows.

Finishing (Joining)

  • With right side up, fold your cover in half lengthwise.
  • Find the central point of your piece of work – from top to bottom and from one side to the other.
  • Slip your crochet cover through the hanger’s hook and ensure that it fits nicely around the edges.
  • Row 1 of the border: Single crochet through both sides to join, from one short end to the other.
  • Each rib represents 2 rows, so when you join, sc in all the ribs and dips.
  • In the corners:  sc, ch2, sc in the same st.
  • Don’t cut your yarn yet – next, we’ll do the border.

Lacey Border

Work along the edge, following the bottom  and last side edge:

Row 2: Start at the top of the side – ch3 + ch2 (ch3 is for the height of the dc, and ch2 is to create your frame). Skip 2 sts, dc in each of next 3 sts, ch2, sk2, dc, ch2, sk2.

Corner of the long side: 3dc into the corner, *ch2, sk2, dc, ch2, sk2, dc in each of the next 3 sts**, repeat across ending with dc, ch2, sk2.

Corner of the left side:  3dc into the corner, ch2, sk2, dc, ch2, sk2, dc in each of the next 3 sts, ch2, sk2, dc into the last st.

Row 3:  ch3, in the same st make the following *[2dc-cl into the second/middle dc of the 3dc of the previous row, ch1, picot, ch1, 2dc-cl], ch3, sc in top of single standing dc, ch3**.  Repeat from * to ** across and around the other side ending with [2dc-cl into the second/middle dc of the 3dc of the previous row, ch1, picot, ch1, 2dc-cl], ch3 and a slip st into the last dc.

Step 5: Add the Bow (Optional but Recommended)

Crochet a bow like the one featured in the crochet dishcloth pattern, or wrap yarn around two of your fingers around 20 times, cut a smaller piece, and attach it to the center.  Attach to the hanger with a glue gun or sew in place.

Final Thoughts

And there you have it — a simple little technique that makes such a beautiful difference.

The picot stitch is one of those small details that can instantly elevate your crochet, whether you’re adding a delicate border, finishing off a granny square, or giving a handmade gift that extra special touch.

If you are not ready to attempt the border, just add a nice pom-pom edging or leave it as is — try different finishes and make it your own. That’s where the magic really happens 💗

If you enjoyed this tutorial, I’d be so chuffed if you shared it on Pinterest or with a fellow maker — it really helps support my work and keeps the free patterns coming!

Happy crocheting!
