The Knit-Look Crochet Stitch Behind This Headband
Abbreviated in this pattern as = hdcss blo
The ribbed texture in this headband is created by working into the back loop only, which gives the fabric its knit-like appearance. The result is a stretchy, structured stitch that looks more complex than it actually is.
This stitch works particularly well for headbands and earwarmers because it holds its shape while still being soft and flexible. It’s also a versatile stitch that can be reused for other projects such as cowls, scarves, cuffs, and garment edging.
It is a Crochet Stitch You Can Reuse for Multiple Projects
GAUGE AND SIZE

The Free Crochet Pattern
Start with any amount of chains required to achieve the circumference needed.
For an adult woman size, with measurements and yarn/hook combination (above), chain 65 + 1.
1st row: slip stitch in second chain from the hook, ss in every st to the end, ch1 and turn; (65 slip stitches) – forming a ‘V’.
2nd row: In the back loop of all the stitches across this row, hdcss; ch1 and turn.
Repeat row 2 until your work measures 2cm, 20-21″ (or your requirements).
Leaving a long tail to sew the ends together, cut the yarn.
How to Fold and Sew the Knotted Front
- With the wrong side of your piece facing you, fold both ends in half.
- Think of the one end in your left hand as a “C” and a flipped “C” in your right.
- Insert the flipped “C” into the “C”, to form a layer.
- Layer = bottom “C”, bottom flipped “C”, top “C” and then top flipped “C”.
- Sew through all the layers and secure your end.
- Weave in remaining ends.
How to Adjust this crochet headband pattern for different sizes
- For double knit yarn and size 4mm crochet hook, chain 80 + 1 sts
- Simply chain fewer stitches to match the desired head circumference.
- Use a different yarn weight and crochet hook combination.
- Ensure you’ve measured the circumference correctly and start with the correct amount of chains.
- Because crocheting a headband only takes a little yarn, you can make it in scrap yarns in different colors.
