If you already know how to crochet a granny square, you can jump straight to the folding steps below.
How to Fold a Granny Square into a Heart (Step-by-Step Photo Tutorial)
This little heart is folded in the same way you would fold paper — no complicated shaping required. Once you see the steps, it comes together beautifully!
Step 1 — Lay the Square Flat
Place your granny square flat on a table with the right side facing down (the side you want visible later should be against the surface).
Turn the square so one corner points toward you, like a diamond shape rather than a square.

Place the granny square with the right side facing down before beginning the folds. Make sure the corners are aligned so the heart shape forms evenly.
Step 2 — Fold the Top and Bottom Corners
Fold the top corner to the centre of the granny square. Bring the bottom corner over the top corner to meet the top of the fold. The square looks like a folded pancake.

Fold the top corner inward to the centre, then bring the bottom corner up to meet the folded edge. The square will look slightly layered at this stage — this is exactly right.
Step 3 — Create the Heart Shape
Fold the right side upward toward the center top point.
Repeat with the left corner, folding it upward so both sides meet near the middle.
You will now start to see the rounded top shape of a heart forming.

As the folds come together, the granny square begins to form a heart shape. Adjust the layers gently so both sides look even.
Step 4 — Fold the Top Corners Down, Tuck the Side Points & Secure
At the top, you will have two small pointed corners.
You can now choose to fold each of the pointed tips slightly inward for a more rounded top (secure with a stitch or glue gun).
This softens the points and creates the curved top of the heart.
If small side points stick out, gently fold or tuck them behind the heart to round the edges.
Adjust the folds until the shape looks balanced.

Fold the top corners and sides inward to soften the upper edges and define the curves of the heart.
Step 5 — Sew the Middle Fold (Secure the Heart)
Using a yarn needle and matching yarn, sew a few small stitches through the middle fold to secure the layers together. This helps the heart keep its shape and gives it a neat, finished structure. Fasten off and weave in the ends at the back.

The stitches do not need to be perfect — they will be hidden within the folds.
Other ways to secure the folds:
- fabric glue,
- or simply leave them loose if placing the heart inside a card or gift.

Sew the middle fold together using a few small stitches to secure the layers. This step holds the heart shape firmly in place and gives the project a neat, finished structure.
Step 6 — Shape and Finish
- Turn the heart over and gently shape it with your fingers.
- Flatten lightly so it holds its form.
Your granny square has now transformed into a sweet little heart — perfect for gifts, decorations, or using up leftover yarn.

I’ve noticed that folding the granny square from the bottom upwards gives the heart a slightly softer and more elegant shape. Try folding it both ways and see which version you prefer — small adjustments can make a surprising difference!
