Easy chunky love crochet pillow cover pattern

Whether you’re a seasoned crocheter or a beginner the cushion cover is not difficult at all. All you have to do is crochet 3 rectangles (different sizes), crochet it together and you have one pillow cover!

It is a removable crochet scatter cover in the envelope-style to make washing easier.  No extra notions are necessary to complete your crochet project.

MATERIALS NEEDED TO CROCHET

  • For the cover and i-cord, I used 200g Elle Unspun chunky yarn, 100% acrylic
  • Approximately 65g of yarn for the pom-poms
  • Hook size N-15, size 0 (UK) or 8 mm crochet hook.
  • Pillow insert, approximately 16 inches/ 42cm.
  • Tapestry needle
  • Scissors
  • The Pattern
  • Pom Pom maker (optional)

BASIC CROCHET STITCHES USED

Crochet skills required:

  • How to chain stitch
  • Crochet a single crochet (Double crochet – UK) – watch video tutorial below
  • Joining with a slip stitch (sl st)

NOTES

  • Chain 1 at the beginning of each row, does not count as a stitch.
  • Measure the width and length of your cushion and add an extra couple of inches to compensate for the height.

Measurements

Pillow cover finished size:  L:  19″ and W:  11″

Length of cover is the horizontal measurement from left to right.

Width:  vertical measurement from top to bottom.

Height:  is the thickness of the new pillow (or in my case – a fun project to revamp an old one!)

Gauge:

10 sts over 11 rows to obtain a 4 x 4 inch square.

Finishing up your pillow cover

Seaming:

  • You’ll be stitching together 3 sides of each panel.
  • Place the panels as in the photo above.
  • Holding the front crochet panel and one back panel together with right sides facing, slip stitch (sl st) the two pieces together.
  • You can also use a whip stitch to sew the panel pieces together.
  • Add the third panel on top of the other back panel and stitch the 3 sides together.  (you will be stitching 2 sides twice).  If you are familiar with sewing, it is the same concept.
  • Be sure to match up the panels’ sts and rows.
  • Turn right side out. Insert pillow.

Making Pom Poms

  • To use a pom-pom maker, follow the instructions shared in this post
  • Use your hands to make pom-poms – see photo image tutorial below.
  • Grab something in your yarn stash matching your colors.
  • For the heart pom-pom: make a normal pom-pom. Draw a heart or download a template and trim the pom-pom into a heart shape. It needs a bit more cutting but just keep on going.

How to crochet I-cord

Watch the video tutorial below how to crochet an i-cord.

The length of the i-cord will depend on the word and script you are going to be using.  You can always print the wording out, but I managed to ‘write’ it freehand.

Length of i-cord for the word ‘LOVE’ is between 33 and 35″.

Find the center point of your front panel and ‘write’ your word out, spacing it properly. Remember, I substituted the ‘o’ in love with a heart pom-pom.

With your needle and yarn, sew the i-cord to your panel securely.

IN CONCLUSION

Use the simple crochet pillow cover pattern to add color and texture to your living room.  Or personalize the wording with a name or special message.  This is an easy way to be creative and challenge yourself – you can do it.

I’ve opted for a solid color but maybe you want to try different colors of yarn.  Try and create an interesting look, something that you’ll be proud of.
