Pattern Notes To Clarify
The Slip Double Crochet Stitch Used for This Headband
In this pattern, the slip double crochet stitch is abbreviated as sl dc.
The texture of this headband is created by working sl dc stitches only, which forms the raised ridges visible in the fabric.
How to Work the Slip Double Crochet (sl dc) –
To work a slip double crochet stitch:
- Yarn over.
- Insert your hook into the stitch (or chain).
- Pull the hook under the yarn over to create a slip stitch.
- Yarn over and pull through the remaining two loops on the hook.
Repeat these steps for each stitch as instructed in the pattern.
Gauge
Measured over 10 cm / 4 inches:
- 13 stitches = 10 cm / 4 inches
- 12 rows = 10 cm / 4 inches
in Slip DC Stitch (worked flat), using DK cotton and a 4mm hook.
Finished Size and Resizing
A comfortable adult headband usually measures 48–52 cm (19–20.5″) unstretched, depending on stretch.
Finished Size:
Approx. 61 cm / 24 inches in circumference (Adult), unstretched.
Sizing:
- Small: 53–56 cm / 21–22 inches (70 + 1 chains)
- Medium: 58–61 cm / 23–24 inches (78 + 1 chains)
- Large: 63–66 cm / 25–26 inches (84 + 1 chains)
- Measure your head circumference and subtract approximately 2 stitches to allow for minimal negative ease.
- This is a standard medium adult size with a little ease, perfect for DK yarn and a 4mm hook.
- If you want a negative ease, use 2 or 3 less chains/stitches.
- The headband is designed to snugly fit most adult head sizes.
- Remember that the twist also reduces the size a bit.
- To adjust the fit, add or remove stitches in multiples required by the pattern repeat.
- Gauge is not critical for this pattern, but changes in yarn or hook size will affect the final fit.
- Only do a gauge swatch if you use a different yarn to stitch combination.
- The headband is designed to fit comfortably without needing excessive stretch. Fit may vary depending on yarn choice and individual tension.
- The stitch pattern is reversible and
- You can use any amount of stitches.
Textured Crochet Twist Headband – The Pattern
The pattern is in US terms.
This headband has minimal negative ease due to the stitch pattern and construction.
Row 1 – Foundation Chain
Chain to the desired head circumference, allowing for minimal negative ease. As a guide, measure your head and subtract approximately 2 or 3 chains/stitches before starting. Chain any number required to achieve the correct circumference.
For an adult woman size(medium), using the measurements and yarn/hook combination listed above, chain 78 + 1.
Row 2
Working into the 2nd ch (second chain) from the hook, make sl dc in each chain across.
Chain 1 and turn.
Repeat
Repeat Row 2 by making a sl dc in the next st, and each st throughout, until the headband reaches the desired width.
Fasten off, leaving a long tail for sewing the short edges together.
How to Fold and Sew the Knotted Front – see photo tutorial
The following may sound complicated but just remember that you need to create a flat seam with both ends.
- With the wrong side of your piece facing you, fold both ends in half.
- Think of the one end in your left hand as a “C” and a flipped “C” in your right.
- Insert the flipped “C” into the “C”, to form a layer.
- Layer = bottom “C”, bottom flipped “C”, top “C” and then top flipped “C”.
- Sew through all the layers and secure your end.
- Weave in remaining ends.
- On the front of the headband, adjust the twist neatly.

Where Else You Can Use This Stitch
The stitch used in this twisted crochet headband is a versatile one that works well anywhere you want texture without bulk. Because it creates a structured yet flexible fabric, it adapts easily to other small crochet projects.
You can use this stitch for:
- Ear warmers and headbands – perfect for variations with or without a twist detail
- Cowls and neck warmers – especially when you want texture without heavy layering
- Cuffs and wrist warmers – the stitch holds its shape while remaining comfortable
- Scarves with subtle texture – ideal for simple designs that rely on stitch definition
- Edgings or accent panels – adds interest to otherwise plain projects
Once you’re familiar with the stitch, it’s easy to adjust the width, length, or finishing details to suit different designs. It’s the kind of stitch that becomes a reliable option when you want something that looks polished but stays enjoyable to crochet.
