INTERNATIONAL CROCHET MONTH BLOG HOP

I designed the beginner little crochet coin purse for the 2024 International Crochet Month Blog Hop, hosted by Underground Crafter, based on the instruction to design something that I love about crocheting.

What is there not to love about this easy crochet craft?

The Crochet Along (CAL) offers a lot of free crochet patterns, get all the detail plus info on giveaways and prices in Marie’s post.

Materials Needed

1. Cotton yarn in 3 colors, white, black and mustard, double knit weight yarn (less than 50g needed for the whole purse)
2. Crochet hook E/4 (US), 9 (UK), 3.5mm
3. Purse frame, sew-in type

4. Stitch marker (optional)
5. Strong thread for sewing to the frame (I used machine embroidery thread)
6. Sewing needle, unless you can find a thin tapestry needle that will pass through the holes of the frame.

FAVORITE YARNS TO USE FOR MINI PURSE

I’d recommend cotton yarn.  If you use the yarn of your choice, be sure to adjust your gauge. Cotton is durable and will last a lifetime.

Written Instructions

Purse Base (Rectangle bottom)

In color A (mustard) – chain 10 +1

1st Row:  make the first sc in second chain from hook.  Continue with sc in next st and across, ch1 and turn (10 sts).

2nd Row:  in first st from hook, sc and in each stitch across, ch1, turn.

Rows 3 to 14 – as row 2.

Purse Body (vertically upward)

Row15:  you will now start creating the outside edges of the purse.  You can place your st marker in the first stitch here.  sc in each st across  (10 sts), sc in each st alongside the one side (14 sts), sc in each st across the starting chains (10 sts) and 14 sts alongside the other side. Slst into the first st of the round (48 sts).

Step 1:  Measure your rectangle against your metal frame to see if it fits the inside of the frame.

Row 16:  to maintain tension, I needed more rows along the longer sides.  slst in each st across the short edge (10 sts), sc in each st along the one side (14 sts), slst again in each st across the other short edge (10 sts) and 14 sts along the other longer side, slst into the first st of the round.

Step 2:  For a less obvious seam, each round will continue into the following, meaning that you will not close off a round with a slst.

Step 3:  To ensure proper color transitions, end your last part of the single crochet st, in the following color – see tutorial.

In color B (white)

Row 17: in the back loop of each st, sc across.

In color C (black)

Row 18: sc in each st across.

In color B (white)

Row 19: sc in each st across.

In color C (black)

Row 20: sc in each st across.

Repeat rows 18 and 19 until you have completed 16 rows, ending with color B.

Fasten off and weave in yarn ends.

FINISHING YOUR SIMPLE coin purse

Assembly:  Mark your sides with st markers at  st 1; sts11; st25 and st 36.

Follow the steps below:

PHOTOS EXPLAINING HOW TO CROCHET THE COIN PURSE

Using a crochet hook and yarn as recommended, crochet base for the coin purse. With the correct tension, you should have a rectangle slightly smaller than the metal frame.

If not, adjust the pattern by adding or reducing the number of rows.  The pattern was adjusted by using slip stitches along the top and bottom sections of the cute crochet coin purse and single crochet stitches along the longer sides of the rectangle.

Proceed to crochet the upright side of the coin purse until it completes 16  rows or until it is about 3.15 or 8cm″ tall. Place the frame on the edge, to fit it.

Lining your purse is  optional.  I chose not to line.

Use your stitch markers to secure the frame to the purse – as per the image above. Find the middle of the hinges and attach them to the frame as well.  If you don’t have stitch markers, use a temporary stitch.

Remove the st markers except the ones at the hinges to make it easier to insert the purse edges into the channel of the frame.

Slotting the edges into the channel can be fun if the purse is a little larger than the frame. I ended up using a blunt letter knife. If it is too much of a hassle, start stitching and inserting as you go.

Thread your needle and start stitching the frame to the purse body through the holes in the frame.

Secure thread to the inside of your fabric, sew from inside through the first hole, and from the outside through the second hole, pull snugly.
Sew each stitch double if you wish to secure your sewing more.  Keep going at it – you’ll get the snag of it after the 5th stitch!

Sew around the frame ensuring that the edges are into the channel.  Secure your thread with a double knot and extra stitches on the inside.

MAKING THE TASSELS

With mustard, wrap around two fingers about 15 times – depending on the thickness required.

Take a length of yarn to wrap about an inch from the top, knot and hide ends with your needle.

With your hook and mustard yarn, chain 25 and end off. Weave the chains through the top of the tassel and add to purse.
