Special stitches & Notes
POPCORN STITCH
A popcorn stitch is created by crocheting a specified number of stitches all in the same stitch, which in our case, will be 5 double crochet stitches (US) or 5 trebles (UK).
Here is how to crochet a popcorn stitch:
- Work 5 double crochet stitches into the same stitch.
- Drop the working loop from your hook.
- Now, insert your hook under the top two loops of the first double crochet of this group (of the 5 dc’s) as per image below, and then
- grab the dropped loop of the 5th double crochet, with your hook and pull it through the first double crochet (with a slip stitch).
DIFFERENCE BETWEEN POPCORN AND BOBBLE STITCH
The main difference is that Popcorn stitch is made by crocheting complete dc whereas bobble stitch is made up of incomplete dc sts.
FPDC & BPDC are:
- Double crochet stitches worked around the next dc in the row below. I know that is totally confusing! Refer to the image tutorial below.
- These stitches create vertical bars on either the front or back of your crochet work, adding texture and dimension.
BPDC
(Back post double crochet)
- Yarn over (YO) .
- Insert your hook from the back to the front and then to the back again around the post of the stitch indicated.
- Pull up a loop.
- Yarn over, draw through two loops on the hook twice.
FPDC
(Front post double crochet)
- Yarn over (YO).
- Insert your hook around the post from front to back to front, of the next stitch in the previous row.
- Pull up a loop.
- Yarn over and draw through two loops on the hook twice and complete just as a normal dc.
OTHER PATTERN NOTES
The pattern is written in crochet shorthand. For example:
- “dc 1” means to double crochet one in the next stitch,
- “dc 6” means to double crochet in each of the next 6 stitches, etc.
Ch5 at the end of each row, make up turning ch2 and ch3 – dc.
Two COLUMN PATTERN
Column A – is the first column of the pattern with either fpdc or bpdc creating a definite textured vertical line, and
Column B – a number of double crochet stitches with a centered popcorn stitch.
Suitable Yarn
Use the best weight yarn suitable for your crochet project, soft for baby’s delicate skin and durable to sustain multiple washes.
Follow the care directions of the manufacturer.
GAUGE AND SIZE
Hook and tension may differ. You can crochet a gauge swatch if you want to create the exact size.
With the listed yarn and hook, my blanket measures:
105cm (40″) x 140cm (55″) (length), a total of 102 rows

FINISHING YOUR BLANKET with a border
As the pattern is full of texture, it was finished off with a simple 3-row single crochet border.
Assuming your last stitch of the last row ended on the top left with the right side facing you:
- with the main color (or contrasting color if you like), sc in each stitch (or stitch opening) of your first ‘long’ side;
- in the corner space, make 3 single crochets to shape the rounded corner.
- work around all sides and sl st last sc into the first sc of the third row.
- Weave in the ends.
adjusting your blanket to a different size blanket
You can adjust the size to your preference by using multiples of 16 sts (both columns) + 7sts for another column A at the end of your row + 2 chains for the first and last double crochet sts.
IN CONCLUSION
Use the gorgeous baby blanket pattern to crochet a great gift for a baby shower, a throw for afternoon naps, or just because you want to crochet the lovely blanket.
My girls were of the opinion that the whole blanket in cream will look modern. I’m curious to see which colors you will be using.
