Easy Crochet Granny Square Bed Socks – Free Pattern
Using simple granny squares and soft 4-ply cotton yarn (or yarn of your choice), you’ll have a comfortable pair of bed socks or slippers in no time.
Yarn Suggestions
For these bed socks, I recommend a soft and breathable 4-ply cotton yarn. Cotton is an excellent choice because it’s durable and allows air to circulate, preventing sweaty feet while you sleep.
Here are some options:
- Lion Brand Yarn Coboo (3 – Light): This yarn is a blend of cotton and bamboo, perfect for creating lightweight and soft socks.
- WeCrochet Shine Sport (3 – Light): Another smooth cotton blend with a nice sheen, making it great for sock projects.
- Patons Grace (3 – Light): A 100% mercerized cotton option that is durable and has a lovely shine, ensuring your socks keep their shape.

Warning about crocheted slippers/bed socks
Yarn slippers can be super slippery, especially on hard floors like tile, wood, or laminate.
To avoid any slips, I recommend adding something to the bottom to give them a grip. You can use fabric puff paint, or even sew on grippy fabric or strips of leather (though also slippery). Stay cozy and safe!

How to Block Your Granny Squares (optional)
Blocking is an essential step to ensure your granny squares have a uniform size and smooth edges.
Here’s how you do it:
- Prepare a Blocking Surface: Use a foam mat or a thick towel on a flat surface.
- Pin the Squares: Gently stretch each square to the desired shape and size (4×4 inches). Pin the corners to the blocking mat if needed.
- Dampen the Squares: Using a spray bottle, lightly mist the squares with water until damp but not soaked.
- Let Dry Completely: Allow the squares to dry fully before removing the pins. This may take a few hours or overnight.
Sock Assembly (video tutorial below)
- Weave in the ends of your Granny Squares see note below.
- Block Your Granny Squares as outlined above (optional).
- Layout for Each Sock:
- You will need 6 squares per sock (12 in total).
- Lay out 4 squares for the sole and sides of the sock and 2 squares for the front and heel.
- Join the Squares:
- Use the Whip Stitch Join method or crochet the 4 squares for the sole and sides, together.
- Next, join the front and heel as per photo tutorial.
- Form the Heel:
- Once the squares are joined, fold the heel square in half and join on the right side with a bow or button (optional).
- Add the String (optional):
- If your socks are too loose, weave in yarn around the edges and tie them together like shoe laces. Pattern laces: 3 colors each measuring 100cm or 39″.
- Repeat for the Second Sock.
Some notes about weaving in the ends
HOW TO join GRANNY SQUARES with single crochet stitches
- Lay out the granny squares as per the image above (right sides facing up).
- Start with Squares #2 and #3, right-sides facing: join matching yarn in the ch2-corner with a slip stitch. Join one side of the 2 squares with single crochet stitches from right to left, through both loops of both squares (sides a and a, b tot b etc).
- Continue single crocheting through both loops of both squares along the edge.
- Repeat: Keep going with this process until squares 2,3,4 and 5 are joined, (to form one big square).
- Join square #1 to square #2 to sides marked ‘e’ and ‘f’.
- Square #1 and square #4 are to be joined at the side marked ‘g’.
- Square #4 and #5 to be joined at side marked ‘h’.
- Join squares #5 and square number #6 at sides marked ‘i’ and ‘j.
Adding a Finishing Touch
If your socks are too loose, weave in yarn around the edges and tie them together like shoe laces.
Pattern laces: 3 colors each measuring 100cm or 39″.
To finish the edges – add a row of single crochet stitches or a decorative border.
Add pom-poms to the ends if you wish.
