Quick and Easy Crochet Stitches – How to Moss Stitch

After you have learned how to crochet moss stitch, you'll fall back on this lovely textured stitch whenever you want something firm and neat. 

Would you believe me that it is a repeat of 1 x sc, ch1 and to skip one stitch?

Moss, Linen or Granite stitch, as it is known by, looks gorgeous in one color and equally as nice in multiple colors.

Quick and Easy Crochet Stitches - How to ​

MOSS / SEED / LINEN / GRANITE / WOVEN STITCH


Not only is it easy for beginners to start with, it also provides a neat but firm and elegant finish.

One glance at your finished product, and the family will refer to you as the crochet expert!

Abbreviations – US terms 

ch – chain
sc – single crochet
sk – skip
sp – space

Note

The chain at the beginning of each row, does not count as a stitch

Crocheting is very forgiving.  Whether you use an even or uneven number of stitches, just ensure that your sides line up and that your work keeps straight.


This pattern was created for an even amount of stitches.

Make a slip knot as per the video and image below.

After the slip knot, your next step is to create chain stitches.

The amount of chains will depend on your project.  The pot holder pattern at the bottom of the post, 30 chain stitches were made, ch 1.

PLEASE NOTE:

You can start directly with your pattern (moss stitch) or you can add a row or two of normal single crochets (sc).

In the video, you'll notice that I crocheted one row of sc's.'

Row 1: Sc 1 in 2nd ch from the hook, *ch 1, sk 1 ch, sc in next ch; repeat from * to end; turn.

Row 2: Ch 1, Sc 1 in first sc, sc 1 in next ch-1 sp, *ch 1, sc 1 in next ch 1 sp; repeat from * to last sc, sc 1 in last sc; turn.

Row 3: Ch 1, Sc 1 in first sc, *ch 1, sc 1 in next ch 1 space; repeat from * to last 2 sc, ch 1, sk 1 sc, sc 1 in last sc; turn.

So what can you make once you've learned how to Moss stitch?

You can make:

  • Jackets, jerseys
  • Hats
  • Gloves
  • Scarves
  • Throw, blankets, blocks to create throws, blankets
  • Toys
  • Home ware
  • If you can think of something to crochet, you can use the moss stitch!

Make this quick and easy pot holder using moss stitch!

I used cotton yarn and a 4mm crochet hook.

The pattern:

  • Chain 30 stitches;
  • Follow the directions to moss stitch above and continue until your work forms a square;
  • Cast off;
  • Cut a piece of felt/fabric slightly bigger than your square (in a contrasting color);
  • Fold the edges of the felt/fabric to the inside and sew close to the edge with a plain stitch;
  • You can opt to hand stitch the felt/fabric to the crocheted piece or use some decorative hand embroidery stitches (like blanket stitch);
  • To form the hook, join your yarn to one corner of the pot holder and chain 15;
  • Slip stitch back on your chains and then back to the top;
  • Attach the end of the hook to the back of the pot holder with a slip stitch;
  • Use an embroidery needle and secure the hook with a few extra stitches;
  • Weave in the ends;
  • Embellish with some buttons or ribbon.
