Lace Knitting, Great Bernera Knit Stitch Pattern

The Great Bernera Lace Knit Stitch pattern is by far the loveliest knitting swatch I’ve knitted.

Seriously, before the 36-row repeat puts you off, it is not an intricate pattern to master, and you will be surprised at how easy it is to follow the sequence of the pattern.

Another plus of this lace knitting pattern is that it is a learning experience to pattern design – you will understand what I mean, whilst knitting it.

The Great Bernera Lace Stitch Pattern 1024x1024 Lace Knitting, Great Bernera Knit Stitch Pattern

The Great Bernera Lace Knit Stitch Pattern

The Great Bernera lace knit stitch pattern has a stocking (stockinette) stitch background, framed in a shaped diamond with an eyelet border.  The diamond pattern has a garter stitch background, with a knot or small bobble in the middle for a nice accent.

Each pattern repeat is separated by a purl stitch, so well designed, that it gives the impression of columns.

IF YOU ARE NEW TO LACE KNITTING

All Lace knitting patterns have openwork, i.e.holes or openings of some sort in the knitting project.

Openings are created by increasing stitches, ie:

  • yarn over‘ or
  • elongated stitches (more of a slit than a hole.)

Increases are followed by decreasing stitch methods, such as k2tog or ssk.

MATERIALS NEEDED:

  • Double Knit (Light / Worsted) Elle Yarn
  • Knitting Needles according to the thickness of your yarn (I used 4mm, 6US, 8UK)
  • Scissors
  • The Pattern

KNITTING TECHNIQUES USED:

You’ll need to know how to:

  • Cast on stitches
  • Knit stitch
  • How to purl
  • Knit 2 stitches together
  • SSK – slip, slip, knit
  • Knit a small bobble or knot
  • Yarn over
  • Casting off stitches

SPECIAL KNIT TECHNIQUES

HOW TO SSK?

Slip, slip, knit is a left-leaning decrease, whilst k2tog slants to the right.

SSK – with yarn in the back, slip the next 2 stitches knitwise (one at a time) onto the right needle. Insert the left needle into the front loops of both stitches and insert the right needle through the back loops, then knit the 2 stitches together.

Yes, SSK may give the impressions that you will be working 3 stitches, but no, only two stitches are involved.

How to knit a small bobble (knot)

Knit into the front, back and front of the same stitch.

Turn

Purl the 3 sts

Turn

Slip 2 sts knitwise together, knit the last st and pass the slipped sts over the knitted stitch.
