Knitting Stitch Patterns

There are various ways to categorize knitting stitch patterns, and mainly because of:

  • the effect of the knitting pattern,
  • how easy the stitch pattern is,
  • is it textured, smooth, reversible?
  • where do you use the stitch and the knitting project it is most suited for.

Knitting patterns can also be categorized according to the regions it originated from, such as Shetland, Aran (from different Islands), and Scandinavian.

Various Knitting Stitches

It is thus fair to bundle the knitting stitches accordingly:

  1. Knit and Purl Stitch Patterns/Basic stitches
  2. Variations on basic stitches
  3. Cable patterns
  4. Bobble patterns
  5. Embossed patterns
  6. Looped knitting
  7. Openwork / Eyelet and Lace patterns
  8. Faggot stitches
  9. Colourwork
  10. Colourwork variations
  11. Slip patterns
  12. Knitting shapes
  13. Edging and borders
  14. Modular knitting
  15. Entrelac

How knitting stitches are combined

Knitting stitches can be used together in panels, in blocks or squares, or as a type of sampler knitting project.

Sampler knitting is popular when used in blanket knitting.  It is also a great way to use up all the small balls of yarn (stash buster).

People who use a lot of cables in knitting are especially loving to vary the stitches with moss, or some sort of ribbing.

Treat your knitting as your canvas and enjoy the art.

Different knitting techniques are being used to create different results in knitting, as with:

  1. Knitting with beads
  2. Embroidering on knitting
  3. Knitting patchwork
  4. Knitting in the round
  5. Intarsia
  6. Fair Isle

This is my way of categorizing knitting stitches and there may be many factors that can cause you to believe different.  If you want to add to it, please email me, it will be highly appreciated.
