How to Knit Small Knots: Step-by-Step Tutorial & Video Tutorial
- Work as if you are preparing to knit a regular stitch
- Insert the right needle into the stitch on the left needle as if to knit (from front to back, through the front loop).
- Take your yarn and wind it around both needles three times.
- Ensure the wraps are even and snug, but not too tight, so you can pull the needle through smoothly.
- Carefully pull the right needle out of the stitch on the left needle.
- You should now have three threads hanging over where the stitch was + the thread from the actual st.
- Insert your right needle into the back of all four threads.
- Knit as usual.
- Slide the original stitch and threads off the left needle.
- These knots will create a raised, textured effect on your fabric.

Size of Finished Knitted Christmas Tree
The tree measures about 4.5 in / 12 cm from tip to base (trunk not included).
Pattern Notes
- Try to maintain even tension when you are winding the yarn around both needles.
- Use a slightly looser tension than normal knitting to make it easier to pull the needle through the triple wraps.
- We’re making this triangle from the bottom up, so start with more stitches and decrease every other row. You can do this whichever way feels comfiest—either k2tog at both ends or k2tog at the start and ssk (or kspo) at the end. Watch your stitch count, and soon enough, your little triangle will magically take shape!
- I liked to knit 1 first, then do my decrease, and at the end of the row, decrease and finish with 1 knit—just feels nice and neat that way!
- ssk (slip, slip, knit): Slip one stitch knitwise, then the next stitch knitwise, pop your left needle back in and knit them together through the back loops. Voilà—you’ve got a neat little left-leaning decrease!
- kspo (knit one, slip one, pass over): Knit the first stitch, slip the next stitch over it—just like giving it a gentle nudge off the needle. That’s it! You’ve got a tidy decrease that leans nicely.
- These small knots look beautiful when scattered across stockinette or garter stitch backgrounds.
