Handmade Knitted Dog Bed – A Cozy DIY Project for Your Fur Baby
If your dog (or pet) is anything like mine, they have a knack for finding the coziest spots in the house. So, why not knit them their very own bed?

A DIY Dog Bed That’s Tail-Waggingly Good
This handmade knitted dog bed is chunky, comfy, and cute red bows – the kind of thing that’ll make guests ask, “Where did you get that?” Best part? You made it yourself!
You’ll use mega chunky yarn, basic stitches, a pillow, and a bit of stuffing magic to craft a dog basket that’ll make your dog feel extra loved. Let’s dive in!

MATERIALS NEEDED
You’ll be needing the following supplies:
- 15mm knitting needles (US size 19 / UK size 000)
- 400g (160 yards) Mega Chunky yarn in Turquoise (main color)( Super Bulky weight yarn, also called Super Chunky or Mega weight yarn)
- 107g (40yards) Mega Chunky yarn in White
- Scraps of chunky Red yarn for the bow
- 1 x 40x40cm scatter cushion inner (approx. 16×16 inches)
- ±400g Toy filler
- Big darning needle
- Scissors
- A sleepy pup 🐶

KNITTING TECHNIQUE / S USED
You’ll need to how to knit the following basic stitches:
- Cast on stitches
- Knit stitch
- How to purl
- Casting off stitches
GAUGE AND FINISHED SIZE
Measurements are unblocked and unstretched.
Finished dog pet beds measure approximately 25” / 63.5 cm across
Gauge: with supplies listed, gauge to obtain 4″ x 4″ (10cm x 10cm) is 6sts over 8 rows.
ABBREVIATIONS
k – knit
p – purl
RS – right side
st – stitch
sts – stitches
WS – wrong side
PATTERN NOTES
- All patterns are written in standard US terms.
- For neater edges, you can slip (knit-wise) every first stitch of every row.
- Keep in mind: your gauge, yardage used, and finished size may vary depending on if you make any changes to the pattern as written.
How to Knit a Dog Bed
Written Instructions:
Step 1: The Striped Pillow
Cast on 30 stitches in turquoise.
- Work in the following 4-row stripe repeat:
- Row 1: Knit in Turquoise
- Row 2: Purl in Turquoise
- Row 3: Knit in White
- Row 4: Purl in White
- Repeat the 4-row stripe sequence until you’ve completed 42 rows.
- Then switch to garter stitch (knit all rows) in Turquoise for another 42 rows.
- Cast off and weave in your ends.
Assembly:
- Fold your piece in half with right sides facing.
- Stitch two of the open sides together using your darning needle.
- Insert the 40x40cm cushion.
- Stitch the last side closed.
Step 2: The Side Border (or Tube)
Cast on 18 stitches in Turquoise.
- Work in stocking stitch (knit one row, purl one row) until your piece measures 162cm / 63.8 inches in length.
- This should take about 102 rows based on the gauge.
Finishing the tube:
- Sew the long side and one short end closed.
- Stuff with toy filler, then squeeze and knead to distribute the filling.
- Sew the open end shut.
Step 3: The Bow
Cast on 15 stitches in Red yarn.
- Knit 10 rows in garter stitch (all knit).
- Cast off and weave in the ends.
- Use a long piece of red yarn to:
- Wrap around the center of the bow tube (see image below).
- Sew to the seam of the tube for a cute finish.

Final Assembly
- Lay the striped pillow flat.
- Tuck in the four corners as shown in the image (like folding a gift).
- Place the stuffed tube around the pillow, forming a donut shape.
- Turn the bed upside down and sew the tube to the pillow along the seam.
