On my To-make-list for Christmas 2016, was a tag blanket for my grandson Jacques, who was 3-months old at the time.  The little happy face is now a full 3 years old!

Babies at three months start to notice their little hands and the grip is surprisingly strong.  And off course, everything goes to the mouth!

Step 1 - Seek inspiration on Pinterest

Confession time - I can not plan or attempt an item, if I have not looked for inspiration on Pinterest.

I think the Nike slogan was written just for me because the time I have spent 'looking' for the perfect item, I could have made 4!

Step 2 - How do I want my tag blanket                  to look?

I had a cloth diaper that had a mishap embroidered on it - so I decided that the rest of it will make a good front piece and as it is soft, it could serve as a drool cloth too.

I wanted a nice '1st Christmas' embroidery design and found one at Joyous Embroidery on Etsy.

For the backing, I had some Christmas quilt fabric left-over from last year.

The addition of the red satin ribbon happened impromptu.

Step 3 - What you'll need

2 Pieces of Fabric cut into 16 x 16-inch squares.

Embroidery design (optional).

Various piece of different textured ribbon cut into 4-inch lengths.

Satin ribbon for border (optional).

Co-ordinating embroidery thread and thread.

Pins, scissors, sewing and embroidery machines, tape measure and whatever else you will need in the craft room!

Step 4 - Method

Embroider the design on your top fabric (optional).

Place the satin ribbon along the outside edge of the first side of the top fabric piece.

Fold the ribbon back and score with your nail (or iron) to form a fold-line.  (Photo Below - Left)

Fold the satin so that the corner of the satin and the corner of the fabric are at the same place, fold the satin at a 45-degree angle from the corner (score) and lay over the next edge. Pinch the fold and adjust until you have a nice mitred corner on the front. Pin. (Both photo's below)

Continue with the satin ribbon along the remaining sides of the square.

At the last corner, you will have 2 loose pieces of ribbon.  Fold the top piece in a 45-degree angle over the bottom ribbon and pin.

Fold the 4-inch ribbons in half and space it about 2-inches apart, ribbon headed inwards. Secure with pins. (Photo below - Left)

Sew the ribbon on to your fabric about 1/4″ away from the edge.

Always remove pins as you stitch.

Sew along the inner edge of the satin ribbon and along the mitered corners.

Top stitch the mitred corners.

Ensure that the ends of the ribbon are all stitched (top and bottom edges).

Place back piece of fabric over the top piece - right sides facing and pin along all edges.

Sew around the outside edge about 1/2-inch from the edge leaving a gap on one of the sides where you will turn the blanket inside out.

Pull the blanket through the gap and iron the edges down.

Close the gap with hand-stitching or top-stitch around all the edges.

GIFT IDEA

Pair the tag blanket with a dummy clip and wrap with tissue paper in a gift box!

With less than 70 days to Christmas, make a list of all the gifts you still want to make and plan your days carefully!
